Dateline: April 5, 2002.
Situation: Frantic.
Reason: Windows XP Professional.
Allow me to explain; I decided that it was about time I updated the operating system on my machines. I used to use ("look at the pretty blue screen") Windows 95 and had upgraded to ("more pretty blue screens") Windows 98, I then bought two new machines that came pre-installed with ("More b****y blue screens") Windows ME.
Most of my contemporaries were using either Windows 2000 or Windows NT ("What blue screens?") and were quite keen on the new operating system that had more in common with theirs than any of the "blue screen" 9x clones!
[I am presuming that everyone knows that I am referring to the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death' that, inevitably, followed instructions such as 'Press OK to finish' or 'Are you sure you wish to perform this function' and became affectionately known as 'Press any key to do f**k all!']
As an aside, I am of the opinion that somewhere inside Microsoft is a department known as the 'Blue Screen - Function Key Implementation Team'.
I leave it to you to work out the acronym, but they've earned it!
As an exercise in both cost cutting and expediency I upgraded one machine to Windows XP Professional and the other to XP Home. The upgrades were absolutely painless as I had checked which bits would need extra drivers or were incompatible and removed them. (Sometimes I do 'RTFM').
My webcam didn't work nor some other minor pieces of hardware - was I worried? Not a jot - the drivers were all safe and sound on a disc I had made previously.
Including the drivers for the dvd-rom drive and the cd-rw, which was just as well as XP Pro didn't recognize the reading software. Needless to say, I have been trying to recover bits of software ever since!
Enough of this and onwards to the current topic - no archive of the last one as that was lost too! It was built using frames and refused to come down, such is life ............
